Illicit Crops and Territorial Security in Colombia: An Analysis of Social Narratives through Data Science and Natural Language Processing
Abstract
In 2023, Colombia recorded a historic high of 253,000 hectares planted with coca, according to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. This phenomenon, linked to illicit economies and organized crime, constitutes a challenge for territorial security and governance in rural areas. In response, the State has implemented strategies such as manual eradication, herbicide spraying, and crop substitution, which have generated diverse perceptions among the affected communities. The objective of this study was to identify the opinions, perceptions, and feelings linguistically expressed by social actors from municipalities with a high presence of coca crops regarding illicit crops and their eradication. To this end, data science and natural language processing techniques were applied to compare two institutional corpora of a different nature: surveys conducted by National Police officers and testimonies collected by the Commission for the Clarification of Truth. The results showed that narratives about illicit crops are structured around topics related to the armed conflict, drug trafficking, the peasant economy, eradication strategies, and territorial dynamics. These findings show that community perceptions transcend the agricultural sphere and reflect the multidimensional nature of territorial security, providing empirical evidence for the design of more contextualized public policies that are sensitive to social and territorial realities.
