Spontaneous tumor lysis syndrome in a patient with metastatic colon cancer
Abstract
Introduction: Tumor lysis syndrome (tls) is a metabolic oncological emergency that poses a higher risk of morbidity and mortality. It is associated with chemotherapy treatment for neoplastic diseases and is common in patients with malignant hematological neoplasms after the initiation of systemic management; however, it can also occur spontaneously or in solid tumors. Case Presentation: We present the case of a patient diagnosed with metastatic colon adenocarcinoma
who developed spontaneous tumor lysis syndrome. This case is of particular interest due to its “spontaneous”
clinical presentation in the absence of cytotoxic treatment, in a non-hematological tumor, and in an oligosymptomatic manner. Conclusions: Spontaneous tumor lysis syndrome associated with solid neoplasms is an uncommon oncological emergency. However, it is essential to recognize it, as it leads to metabolic disturbances such as hyperuricemia, hyperphosphatemia, hypocalcemia, hyperkalemia, and renal injury, which require aggressive management to prevent morbidity and mortality.
